Frigidaire FFMV164LS Review

Finding an affordable over-the-range microwave oven that has decent specifications and lasts long enough to be a worthy investment is not as easy as it may seem.

A reputable company called Frigidaire has released a budget microwave that has some bizarre design flaws. However, for some it might actually turn out to be a good investment. This is our review of the Frigidaire FFMV164LS over-the-range microwave oven.

Design: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

Frigidaire FFMV164LS looks like something out of an ‘80s cyberpunk flick. As much as we would love to indulge in discussion about Hollywood scenography, this is a product review. (Beauty is in the eye of the beholder anyway). The FFMV164LS will probably not improve the overall interior design of your home, but it will certainly draw attention.

For a start, the FFMV164LS features an old-school door handle, which works well. These door handles are not something we see very often today. Some people probably prefer this solution to buttons and touchpads. The display is placed at the top right corner, the cooking modes and the number pad are placed right below. Some things are missing.

Now comes the bizarre part. It is impossible to use the timer and the microwave itself at the same time. However, the main problem is that the microwave beeps after it finishes cooking. 3 long, extremely loud, high-pitched beeps.

The beeping can’t be stopped by opening the microwave door. The only solution is to quickly press the stop button two times, right as the first beep is starting to go off. There is no other known way to stop it.

Also, you must enter the date and time for the microwave to be able to work. Apparently, the FFMV164LS needs to know what time is it if you want to reheat yesterday’s sausage.

The short life span is another problem. Many customers report the front glass panel shattering after a while, the wiring melting and many other parts of the microwave breaking or not working at all after some time. And in some cases, the exhaust starts working by itself and there is no way to shut it off. If that reads like a positive thing, believe me when I say it is most definitely not.

Performance

Performance is surprisingly decent. If we take the price into consideration, the microwave actually does reasonably well. The FFMV164LS doesn’t have much in the power department, but boils water and reheats food evenly. Defrosting takes time though. A decent number of presets is also available.

The worst thing about performance is the lack of cooking sensor – which means you will have to pay close attention to your meals if you want to avoid over- or under-cooking them.

Overall, the performance is nothing special, but when compared to the puzzling design, it is a pleasant surprise.

Final Verdict: If Salvador Dali Was Alive and Looking for a Microwave to Buy, This Would Probably Be His First Choice

The Frigidaire FFMV164LS over-the-range microwave oven is an incredibly unique, one of a kind product – and not in a good way. No one expected a well-established brand like Frigidaire to release something like this onto the market. Who are the evil geniuses behind this product? Is the FFMV164LS a statement or maybe a social experiment?

Perhaps Frigidaire wanted to be ironic and, in fact, released a parody of the common microwave oven? We may never know, but not everyone will find their idea of satire amusing.

Although it’s hard to conceive someone would intentionally go out and buy this microwave, the abysmal design and all the bizarre flaws make the FFMV164LS the perfect wedding gift if you don’t particularly like the bride. It can also be useful if you want to bully your neighbors with annoying high-pitched noises.
