Sharp is a well-known brand and they have released a large number of microwave ovens onto the market over the last couple of decades. One of their best-selling over-the-counter microwaves is the R-1214 oven and we’ve been checking it out for a while – here’s our verdict.
The R-1214 looks elegant and modern. The microwave should be a nice addition to most kitchens, at least visually – it’s simple, sleek and aesthetically pleasing. The horizontal control scheme is exceptionally well-designed and easy to use. Even if you haven’t had a microwave with a horizontal control scheme before you shouldn’t have any trouble getting used to this one.
With dimensions of 26.9 x 18.6 x 17.1 inches, this is a medium-sized microwave oven that shouldn’t take up too much space, but is still big enough for cooking larger meals. 1.5 cubic foot of capacity is not the largest capacity out there, but should be enough for most households. The R-1214 seems to be Sharp’s attempt at combing the properties of large, powerful microwaves with the practicality of smaller models and, at first glance, it looks like they have managed to create the perfect hybrid.
The light blue display is a nice breath of fresh air, since we’re used to typically black/grey displays and green digits. The door window is covered with white spots and is not very transparent. A strange choice – I’m sure I’m not the only cook who likes to check up on their food from time to time.
But all in all, the R-1214 is a well-designed over-the-range microwave oven that doesn’t have any significant flaws in the design department.
This Sharp model consumes 1100 watts of power, which is a bit more than average. Nonetheless, this hunger for power is completely justified by the stellar performance of this microwave. 11 power levels and an incredibly large number of different cooking options and pre-sets make this microwave very user-friendly and powerful.
The pre-sets are, as follows: Reheat (5 different reheat pre-sets), Sensor Cook Center, Instant Sensor (4 different Instant Sensor pre-sets).
The cooking sensors are very accurate and the pre-sets work very well. This microwave prepares food evenly, reheats and defrosts without a problem. However, the sensor reheat is too strong and overheats food a little bit. This is the only apparent issue with this microwave’s performance, albeit not a big one.
The installation process is very simple, since the user manual is concise and easy to follow. Controls are logical, intuitive and responsive, while the signal tones are subtle, yet just loud enough to be heard. (This is a boon to the legions of people who hate noisy microwave beeps.)
Overall, this microwave performs very well and doesn’t have any major issues. The price is very acceptable and this model is definitely cheaper than most over-the-range microwave ovens of this type.
