We have already reviewed a few Sharp over-the-range microwave ovens and most of them are really good and affordable. Next in line is the R-1871, another medium-sized over-the-range microwave with a built-in exhaust system.
This is an aesthetically… interesting. It seems to be the type of microwave that will divide potential buyers into two groups: those who love the way it looks and those who hate it. This is a clear sign of Sharp’s continual efforts to bring something new to the table, design-wise, and we think it’s certainly something to be applauded.
What’s unusual about this model are the exhaust gratings above the door and the grating-like door glass design. This is certainly not something we see very often. But enough about the visuals, which is mostly a matter of personal taste anyway. Let’s talk about functionality and practicality.
The control scheme is vertical, which isn’t always the case with over-the-range microwaves, so that’s good news for those of you who are used to countertops. The menu is functional and easy to use, except one thing – there is no “add 30 seconds” button, which is something most microwaves have, but there is an “add 1 minute” button. Obviously, this is not a deal breaker, just something worthy of a mention.
Overall, the design is very good and the microwave is easy to use and highly functional. The biggest flaw is the noisy exhaust fan – it’s pretty loud, even with reduced speed. The fan does what it’s supposed to – get rid of steam. If it was only a bit quieter!
The R-1871 performs reasonably well. This is a very versatile microwave with a large number of pre-sets (over 20 of them – all mentioned below in the “Dimensions and Technical Specifications” segment) which make cooking incredibly easy and fast. There is a pre-set for pretty much anything you would think of cooking and there are is also a separate set of cooking options for reheating and defrosting. However, the small space of 1.1 cubic foot makes it impossible to cook large meals. This is the main downside of this microwave when it comes to performance.
The R-1871 prepares food evenly, the cooking sensors are accurate, and all pre-sets work well. However, the best thing about this microwave is the convention oven. This feature means the R-1871 can double as a second oven. This is great if you need to prepare an elaborate feast and want to cook your food as fast as possible. You can turn on both oven and microwave at the same time and you’re set.
Overall, the R-1871 performs very well, but doesn’t really pack a punch or stand out when compared to other similar models. In short, if you don’t need a huge microwave to prepare your food and if you don’t mind the noisy fan, look no further than the R-1871. It is not too expensive either, so that’s definitely another pro.

Final Verdict: A Decent, But Imperfect Over-the-Range Microwave Oven
Sharp’s R-1871 is a good over-the-range microwave oven that has a couple of flaws that could be potential deal breakers for some. The biggest flaw is the noisy fan and 1.1 cubic feet of space certainly isn’t much.
However, the ease of use as well as the convention oven option make this microwave perfectly suitable for those looking for a nice addition to their set of home appliances. The R-1871 is reasonably priced too, which is certainly another plus.
