This microwave from Whirlpool is specifically meant to be placed over your oven range so that there’s more counterspace. That’s a great feature to utilize in your own home, and a fantastic selling point when it comes to real estate. When there’s the illusion of more counterspace, buyers are more inclined to purchase.
This model seems to have a lot of great features, including a hidden vent. Let’s take a look at how it performs and see if it’s worth buying.

There are two variable speed settings for the 220 cubic feet per minute (CFM) updraft fan in this microwave, and a 1,000-watt motor.
Stop the turntable with the touch of a button and prepare anything you wish from pot roasts to party mixes. It has a popcorn setting – the first thing I look for on a new microwave! and 1.7 cubic feet capacity. The turntable has a diameter of 12 inches.
Dimensions are 17.25 inch (h) x 17.875 inch (d) x 29.94 (w)
At first glance, this is a really nice product. It’s quiet and has enough features to be flexible without being overly complicated. If you’re installing an OTR microwave you’ll quickly appreciate the extra space you have in the kitchen.
Having this was actually quite valuable and beneficial beyond being able to heat up food quickly. As someone who has young children that are becoming tall enough to reach the countertops, this is fantastic for me to have in the household as they can’t reach that high yet – and when they’re able to reach that high, they’ll be more than capable of making their own food in the microwave (or dare I say, the stove!).
The Main Problem with the WMH31017AW
Basically this is a good microwave and many people are perfectly happy with theirs. I didn’t come across any problems myself.
But the internet is flooded with people saying theirs broke, normally just after the warranty ended. Look on various online stores and you’ll see plenty of angry customers leaving one-star reviews.
60-70% of customers give this a maximum rating – that’s really pretty good. The problem I have in terms of recommending it is that the one-star reviews are a little too common to dismiss. You always get unhappy customers here and there, but 10-20% is very high and indicates some fundamental problem with the quality and reliability of the product.
Personally I’d buy one if there was a big discount because it’s actually a really good microwave – until it breaks.
- Can be mounted above your stove to save space
- Easy to use, buttons are simple
- Sleek appearance that’s bright and opens up the space
- For those that are just looking for a basic microwave, this one is a tad more expensive because of its ability to be mounted above your oven
- Not ENERGYSTAR qualified
- Not the best for on counter usage
- Serious reliability issues
Who is this Product For?
Those who would buy in this product are probably ones that have such limited space (such as those in a tiny house), or those that have a galley kitchen. When you’re able to start mounting vertically, you’re able to clear up counter space and be able to do more with your space.
For those that have sights on selling on their home soon will find solace in a product as such, as giving the illusion of more counter space is a huge selling point. (And if we’re being cynical, the reliability issue won’t be your problem!)
The Final Verdict
Buy at the right price, but be aware that you might be the ‘1 in 8’ who gets a duff product.
